What is EN590 diesel?

EN 590 is the European specification for automotive diesel fuel. The "10 ppm" grade limits sulphur to 10 mg/kg — roughly 200 times less than legacy D2 gasoil — which is why it is mandatory for modern road vehicles across the EU, UK, and a growing list of Asian, Middle Eastern and African markets. It is the correct grade for fuel distributors, retail networks, fleet operators and any buyer whose market regulates road-fuel sulphur. If your application is off-road or industrial, Diesel Gas Oil D2 is usually the more economical choice — the differences are covered in our EN590 vs D2 guide.

Typical specification (EN 590)

ParameterLimit per EN 590
Sulphur content≤ 10 mg/kg
Cetane numbermin 51.0
Density at 15 °C820 – 845 kg/m³
Flash point> 55 °C
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons≤ 8 % mass
Water content≤ 200 mg/kg
FAME (biodiesel) content≤ 7 % vol

The governing edition of EN 590 and any climate-grade requirements (CFPP class) are fixed in the SCO/FCO. SGS or CIQ verifies the cargo against that specification at loading, and the certificate of quality ships with the documents.

Supply & delivery terms

Logistics & documentation

Clean MR to LR2 product tankers are nominated per parcel size and discharge draft, with laycans fixed in the SPA and prior-cargo suitability observed for ultra-low-sulphur product.

Every cargo travels with a complete document set presented through the banks:

How a transaction works

The sequence is the same for every product we trade: ICPO → SCO → FCO → SPA → POP against payment instrument → loading under SGS/CIQ → delivery CIF or FOB. Each step is documented and verifiable through your bank — the full walkthrough is in the oil trading procedure guide.

Frequently asked questions

What does EN590 10 ppm mean?

EN 590 is the European standard for road diesel; 10 ppm refers to the maximum sulphur content of 10 mg/kg (0.001%). It is the ultra-low-sulphur grade required for modern road vehicles in the EU and many other markets.

What is the minimum EN590 order quantity?

30,000 MT minimum, up to 500,000 MT per contract. Larger term structures are quoted case by case.

What is the EN590 price per metric ton?

Gross indicative pricing is USD 570 per MT CIF and USD 550 per MT FOB, confirmed as firm in the FCO based on destination, quantity and contract length.

Can EN590 be delivered to my port?

Yes — CIF deliveries are quoted to any safe world port (ASWP), subject to draft and berth limits for the nominated vessel size. FOB lifts are available at the loading terminal. See CIF vs FOB to decide which basis suits you.

How is quality guaranteed?

Every cargo is tested by SGS or CIQ at the loading port at the seller's expense, against the EN 590 specification stated in the contract. The certificate of quality travels with the shipping documents.
